How to Measure Carpet for Stairs

Follow this easy guide, complete with a nifty formula, and you’ll be on your way to staircase perfection.

Step 1: Count Those Steps Start by counting each step on your staircase. Remember, each flat part you step on is the tread, and each vertical part is the riser. Count them all up – we’ll need this number.

Step 2: Measure the Width of One Step Grab a trusty tape measure and find out the width of one step. Place the tape from side to side on the flat part you step on – that’s the tread. Note down this width; it’s a crucial piece of the puzzle.

Step 3: Measure the Depth of One Step Next up, measure the depth of one step. Time for the Formula: Total Width= Total Steps × Width of One Step

Step 4: Add Extra for Trimming To ensure you have enough for trimming and wrapping the carpet around the edges of each step, add a bit extra. Here’s the formula: Total Width with Extra = Total Width + ( 0.1 × Total Width )

Armed with these steps, a bit of math magic, and some expert advice, you’re ready to transform your staircase into a stylish haven.  Happy measuring!
